1997 saw WWE fight back against the whipping they were getting from World Championship Wrestling by launching the Attitude Era.  Leading the charge of this new era were Steve Austin and D-Generation XBret Hart didn't care for the direction the company and the country were going in and started a wrestling war between Canadian and American wrestling fans.  This issue culminated with The Montreal Screwjob.

Royal Rumble - Alamo Dome; San Antonio, TX 1/19/1997

  • La Parkita & Mascarita Sagrada beat Mini Vader & Mini Mankind
  • Intercontinental Title: Champion Hunter Hearst Helmsley beat Goldust
  • Ahmed Johnson beat Faarooq by DQ
  • Vader beat The Undertaker
  • Hector Garza, Perro Aguayo, & Canek beat Jerry Estrada, Fuerza Guerrera, & Heavy Metal
  • WWE Championship: Shawn Michaels regained the title from Sid
  • Steve Austin won the Royal Rumble. He was eliminated but the refs didn't see it and he threw out Bret Hart who thought he had won the match.

  • The Nation of Domination beat Flash Funk, Goldust & Bart Gunn

  • Intercontinental Championship: Steve Austin won the title from Owen Hart in a match where if he lost he'd have to kiss Owen's backside. At the end of the match, Steve Austin suffered a horrific neck injury that caused his career to be shortened.
